Jonas' Birthday Dinner

On Friday, Jonas turned TWO!

He didn't know it was his birthday, or even what a birthday was, really, but when he woke up, I could here Marco talking to him over the monitor saying, "Joooonaaaas, it's your BIRTHDAY!" and Jonas giggling.  Then when I walked in and said, "Good morning birthday boy!" he was ALL smiles!

Throughout the day, we didn't say much to him about his birthday... we just went along our usual business... library to exchange books, music class, lunch at home and nap.

But when he woke up, he knew things were different.  My mom was there, and more people started coming over!  I stuck with my plan and only had a family birthday dinner for him... which by the way cost me $100... in case you were wondering.  We had the kids' grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins over... about 14 adults, 3 kids and 1 baby.  It was perfect!

I made crockpot chicken tacos (recipe found here) with all the fixin's... and then we had cake, ice cream and flan for dessert! YUMMO!

Jonas was so happy to have the attention of all his family!  His favorite gift was from my dad and step-mom... the movie, Toy Story 3.  He held onto it for dear life throughout the party.  And he kept running back and forth with his arms outstretched, yelling, "AND BEYOOOOOND!"  He was thrilled!

This boy... he's hilarious!

We were so happy to have had his birthday celebration be the first of many many celebrations in our new home!

Jonas Turns TWO!

Today my little baby boy turns TWO!

That blows my mind.

My little premie.  My 3 pounder.  My clingy one.  My sentimental one.  My sneaky one.  Today, he turns two!

You can read Jonas' birth story here.
And you can see his 1 year post here.

If you've been following along here, you know that the first year of Jonas' life was not easy at all.  On top of being 2 months early, being in the NICU for a month, needing a heart monitor for another month, and having colic for 3 horrible months, being #2 is a challenge all on it's own.  Jonas had to live his first year of life in fear of having fingers poked in the eye, fingers stepped on and bodies squished by his big bro Marco.

His second year of life was sooooo much easier.  He was happy.  He thrived.  He learned.  He got in trouble.  He could finally keep up!

Jonas can say sooooo many things now and he's putting sentences together.  When you ask him how old he is, he shouts, "DOOO" and puts up his thumb and index finger.  He loves running and screaming and throwing all of his bedding out of his crib in the mornings.  He gives us a hard time with eating "real food" but would take milk and cookies any day.  He is not afraid to get dirty and we definitely think he's gonna be our "gross kid"... everyone's got one.  He's fun loving and sweet, he gives hugs and loves snuggling close on the couch.  His favorite thing to play with is my iPhone... hence why it's all cracked, and he'd rather run around with a remote than play with any of his toys.

This boy.  Our Jonas.  We couldn't imagine life without him.  He fills our life with joy. And we are so blessed to have had him around for "DOOO" years already!

Happy birthday baby boy!

Birthdays make me Broke!

Lately I've been thinking about birthdays.  Well, birthday parties, really.

I'm sure for many moms, birthday parties for our children is high on the priority list.  It is for me!

But here's the problem... birthday's don't stop coming!  I feel like we just had Marco's birthday and here come's Jonas' right around the corner!

And birthday parties are expensive!  Living in a city where all of your family lives just multiplies the cost.  Because we can't throw a party and just invite the friends because the family will get their feelings hurt.  But we can't throw a party and just invite the family because then my kids' friends wont be there to celebrate.

For Marco's birthday, which was in the middle of June, we had close to 50 people in attendance!  The total cost for that party was close to $500.  The food alone cost $300 and when you add decorations, favors and cake, there you have it!  $500... for a 3 year old's birthday.

And really, I don't think we went overboard.  The food was simply hotdogs, cheeseburgers, chips, fruit, corn and cupcakes... not too much.  It was a pool party, so we didn't rent a bounce house or an entertainer or a face painter.  We didn't rent tables or chairs, but borrowed them from my dad instead.  So, you know... it was done as cost efficiently as possible.

But still!  We spent $500 just 3 months ago and now it's time to do it all again?!  Don't you think it's a little overkill?  I do.

And part of me feels guilty... well if I did it for one, I should do it for the other... blah blah... parental guilt... blah blah... will I scar them for life?

That's it!  I'm putting my foot down on this whole party money sucking fiasco!

I have decided that for Jonas' 2nd birthday, there will be NO bash. (GASP! FAINT!).  Instead, we will be having a play date at a park on the day before (a Thursday) and I will bring cake pops so that we can sing with his friends.  Then on his actual birthday (a Friday) we will have the immediate family get together at my house... and by immediate family, I mean my parents, my siblings, Mauricio's parents, Mauricio's sister and that's IT!  I'll prepare dinner for us and have a cake to celebrate.

The end.

This plan should cost me about $100.  That's a lot more reasonable than $500.

But I can't always do that to Jonas.  It's not fair that I give Marco a huge all-out bash and then give Jonas a lame ol' play date.  So here's what I'm thinking of doing in the future:

Since their birthday's are 3 months apart, I will have ONE birthday bash at the midpoint, 1.5 months after Marco's and 1.5 months before Jonas'.  We will have an all out, hold nothing back, over the top, party of all parties DUAL birthday party.  And it'll be awesome.

Then on each of their actual birthday's, we'll have the small family gathering with dinner and cake at our house to celebrate them individually.

Honestly, it's just too hard doing two big birthday parties.  It's hard on ME, having to plan everything... it's hard on our guests, having to buy gifts again and having ANOTHER party... it's hard on my husband, having to do all that set up and tear down... and it's hard on our wallet!  This will allow us the opportunity to go nuts for our kids ONCE a year and really celebrate the both of them together.  And the good thing is that since they're only a year apart, hopefully they'll have a lot of the same friends and be interested in the same things.

I'm excited for this!  I wish I had thought of it this year instead!

What do YOU do for your kids' birthday?  Do you do a combined party or give each one their own?  How do you make it work for your family?  I'd love to know!  We're still figuring this whole thing out ourselves!

My baby is ONE!

Today, not only do we celebrate Father's Day, but also the day my beautiful boy came into this world.  One year ago, at 1:09 am, he changed my world forever.  Let's take a little walk down memory lane, as I remember his birth day.

It was June 19, 2009 at 9am when I woke up feeling strange.  I knew I shouldn't be in labor, being only 35 weeks pregnant, but still something wasn't right.  I felt like I was leaking, but only when laying down.  I called into the OB and they asked me to come in.  Since I'd had several "false alarms" throughout the week, I told Mauricio to stay at work and if it was the "real thing", I'd call him to leave.  Little did I know that I really was in labor!  When I arrived at the doctor and they did the oh, so comfortable internal exam, they told me I was 1 cm dilated and 90% effaced.  I was definitely having this baby today!
They wheeled me down to the hospital, but FIRST to the BILLING department!  Can you believe they make you take care of your bill BEFORE you have the baby WHILE you're in labor?  That's a crime!  When I finally got up to the maternity ward, and hooked up, I called Mau and told him it was the real deal. I then called my parents, who immediately took off in the car, a 12 hour drive, to try to make it before the baby arrived!  Then as we all know, is the waiting game.

Once Mau arrived, I was much happier, as he always puts me in such a good mood.  He snuck in some Chick-fil-a, which I devoured (against all recommendations).  But, it was a mistake... as soon as my contractions became a little stronger, up came all my food!  Carol arrived to be another moral support for me, since she's a veteran, and the three of us were having a great time.  I was able to walk, move around and sit in a chair... until my water broke... all over the floor.  Then the dr came in, checked me and said those 3 horrifying words... "Let's start Pitocin".  HOLD THE PHONE!  No one is giving me Pitocin without an Epidural!  Even though my contractions were not unmanageable... yes, I was grunting through them, but not screaming/crying... I refused to have the Pitocin make my body a mad woman.  I had my wonderful, fantastic, lovely Epidural (and I don't regret it one bit)!

After the Epi, it was a REAL waiting game.  There was nothing to do but hang out, watch tv (which is nice because we don't have cable at home, so we take advantage of it at the hospital!) and talk.  At around 9pm, the dr came in and told me that we were going to wait till I was at 10 cm and let the baby come down as far as possible on his own, before I started to push.  He estimated it would be about 4 am before that would happen and he told me to get some sleep.  Well, I didn't take his advice and continued to talk and watch tv for another few hours.  At around 11:30 pm we finally decided to try to go to sleep, but were all very excited.  So we turned off the lights and the tv, and all of a sudden I had an extreme amount of pressure... in my butt.  It was so uncomfortable that I COULD NOT sleep.  I told Carol to run out into the hall and tell the nurse that I wasn't feeling right, and to come check on me.  When she finally got there and checked, it was midnight.  She told me that the baby was already down and I had to begin pushing!  It was time!!

The way you see the pushing in movies and on tv is not at all how my experience went.  Mine was so easy and pleasant that I really didn't feel like I was having a baby.  It was all so surreal!  I would ask the nurse, calmly, "Can I push now", and she'd say yes, so I'd push 3 times.  Then we'd take a rest, talk and laugh, make jokes, and then I'd ask to push again.  It's really amazing how your body knows what to do. It's not just that you want to push... you HAVE to... your body is pushing for you!

At first Mauricio was standing to the side, feeling a little apprehensive about getting up close and personal with what was going on down there, but by half way, he was bent over, looking straight at it, screaming "I SEE THE HEAD!" Carol, on the other hand, was not at all apprehensive.  She was ALL UP in that bizness... we reached a WHOLE new level of friendship that day!

After 55 minutes of on and off pushing, at 1:09 am on June 20th, my beautiful boy was born.  He came right into my arms and even with all that goo and yuck on him, I gave him a little kiss on the head.  I knew something was not right immediately.  He wasn't crying, just whimpering.  I knew, being born 4 weeks early, that something was not right with his lungs.  After cleaning him up and having the pediatrician come in to see him, they sent him to the NICU.

You always dream that after you have your baby, you'll be allowed to hold him and cuddle and breast feed, but that was not the case with me.  After that initial hold, I did not get to hold him again for 2 days.  They didn't even want me to touch him.  He was breathing really laboriously and fast.  He was given a mask that had additional air coming into his face so he wouldn't have to pull it so hard from our atmosphere.  He had the mask on all day, with the exception of twice a day for a few minutes.  Here is the only picture we got of Marco without the mask while in the hospital.

He stayed in the NICU for 6 days... the hardest 6 days of my life. (It really gave me an appreciation and admiration for the parents who spend months in the NICU).  You never think you'll go home without your baby and when you do, it's a very empty and sad feeling.  But, we had our homecoming!
Marco thrived throughout his first year!  Even though he was a premie, he kept up with all of his milestones.  He's been a little low on the curve chart, but that's a blessing for me!  I'm not strong and have loved having a light weight baby!

He smiled at 7 weeks:

Had a fun loving personality right from the start:

And as we celebrate his very first birthday, we took a few photos to commemorate!

The first birthday is bitter-sweet.  I'm going to miss my itty-bitty baby, but at the same time, I've been so blessed to have watched him grow and flourish.  May God bless Marco with many more birthdays, and may He give me the health and life to see it as well.

The Birthday Dilema

Today is Marco's 10 monthday!  I can't believe he's been with us for so long already, but at the same time I can't imagine my life without him.  He makes my heart swell with every little thing he does.  He's been crawling for a while now, but now he crawls FAST!  He is also cruising around the furniture and taking risks by letting go to move to another piece.  I hold my breath every time.  He is funny, confident and sneaky.  He is ticklish ALL over and thinks it's funny when I pretend to suck his paci or eat his food.  He claps along with any music he hears, even commercials and sings at the top of his lungs!  He waits until I'm busy washing dishes or dealing with morning sickness to be extra mischievous; this is when he likes to unroll the WHOLE roll of toilet paper or pull dishes out of the dishwasher.  I love his little personality and I am so blessed to have him every single day.
As of now, I've just been gushing over how amazing my baby boy is, but that's not the title of this post.  The Birthday Dilema, here it is.
Originally I wanted to go down to Miami and celebrate Cuban/Brazilian style with the family at my dad's pool.  The theme was gonna be "Fun in the Sun, Marco's turning One".  But, unfortunately since Marco's birthday is on Father's Day weekend, the plane tickets are overpriced and not worth it.  Ok, so option 1 is out.
The next thing I thought was to have a pool party here at my apartment complex.  I would invite some of my friends and a few of his baby friends, grill some burgers, have some cupcakes, and go in the pool.  The pool here is great because there's a whole section that's only 6 inches deep.  Perfect for babies!  So, I went to talk to the management to see if I could reserve the pool or the club house- No to both.  Ok, then can I just have a getty and I don't care if other people are around- still No.  Why?!  Because apparently we're only allowed (per our contract) to invite 2 people to the pool... so if we have a party and we take up all the seats, so that there's no place for the residents to sit, that's not fair.  AND if someone complains about it, we'll get PENALIZED for BREAKING the contract!  Isn't that absurd?!
Option 3 was to have it at a park.  Well, I found a cool park that's really shaded with pavilions and baby swings not too far from the house.  The first time I saw the park, I thought it was perfect.  But we've been back a few times, and it's MUCH less than perfect.  In fact, it's really ghetto... like, "I wouldn't go there alone" ghetto.  So, that particular park is out, but I could still find another one... I just don't know if it's too much work than it's worth.
At my apartment complex, there's a nice big grassy field with a fire pit.  Option 4 was to have it at the fire pit, since there are grills out there too.  I was thinking of having a picnic party.  Having all the guests bring a blanket and just making a big blanket space so the babies could crawl around.  I'd buy some balls and other random toys so they could all play, and we'd have some yummy picnic style food.  Amazingly, this is NOT against my contract, so it'd be perfectly acceptable.
The last and final option I can think of, is to just forget having a "party" and just have a little get together at my house with only MY friends and NO babies.  It'd just be a dinner and cake cutting to celebrate quietly.  Simple.
I always originally thought that throwing a birthday party for a one year old was just foolish.  I used to think it was a HUGE waste of money... after all, he's not going to remember it and in essence it's just a backdrop for photos.  But, now that we're getting closer, I am having a change of heart.  I still think it's just for the pictures, but I do want to celebrate!
So, readers, if you have a suggestion, or you think one option sounds better than another, I'd love to hear your input.  I've got 60 days to go!
